Aphids both weaken plants and spread diseases. When they feed, they drain essential sap from plants, which reduces the plant’s vigor, can stunt growth, and sometimes causes leaves to curl or yellow. How Aphids Weaken Plants

Aphids are tiny, soft-bodied insects that feed by piercing plant stems, leaves, or buds with their mouthparts and sucking out sap. Sap is like the plant’s “blood”—it contains water, nutrients, and sugars that the plant needs to grow and stay healthy. When aphids feed, they remove this sap, making less available for the plant’s growth and daily needs.

• Plants may look wilted or droopy.
• Leaves can become yellow, curled, or deformed.
• Growth slows, and flowers, fruits, or vegetables may be smaller or fail to develop.
• Heavily infested plants can die, especially if they are young or already stressed.

How Aphids Spread Disease

Aphids are also notorious for spreading plant viruses. When an aphid feeds on an infected plant, it picks up the virus in its mouthparts. If it moves to another plant and feeds again, it can transfer the virus—similar to how a mosquito spreads disease between animals and humans.

• Plant viruses can cause a wide range of problems, including spots, mosaic patterns on leaves, stunted growth, poor fruit or flower production, and plant death.

Other Ways Aphids Harm Plants

Besides sap loss and disease transmission, aphids have a few more harmful effects:

• They excrete a sticky substance called “honeydew.” This attracts ants and creates a surface for “sooty mold” fungi to grow, covering leaves and blocking sunlight.
• Aphid feeding can make plants more vulnerable to other pests and environmental stresses.

Because aphids multiply quickly and spread both physical and infectious damage, monitoring your plants and taking prompt action is important. Check for signs of aphids regularly, especially on new growth, and control them early using pruning, washing them off, encouraging beneficial insects, or using safe pesticides if needed.
